(Spoiler!) Many years ago, I spent a weekend in a house rented upstate New York with a lover who was totally unaware and kept talking to me about another woman he loved. After we broke up, I wanted to tell this story through the lens of two innocent children. In retrospect, that’s how I felt at the time, innocent and clueless. I made the mystery woman a statue, because I never knew who she was, so to me she was lifeless, and perfectly crafted like the statue we featured. Another reason why I came up with the concept of my character Leo, falling in love with the statue, is because I had recently photographed a little boy touching a statue’s breast in a church. This image amused me and I wanted to incorporate it in a film. This is also partially an ode to The Little Rascals, when Alfafa and Darla go on a date but all of Alfafa’s friends sabotage their moment.
